Apprenticeship Assessment Standard Common Challenges

General Hints and Tips

Notes: Apprentices can bring electronic notes to their assessment. However, paper notes aren’t allowed unless a previously agreed reasonable adjustment is in place.

When the apprentice arrives, the independent assessor will check over the notes, and they may be asked to confirm that the notes are their own work.

Within the project, focus on a couple of these areas to ensure you are working towards the distinction grade criteria. Evaluation of Methodologies:

  • Structure clearly: Showing pros/cons of each methodology you used

  • Link to outcomes: Your justification should connect methodology choices to tangible benefits

  • Be honest about limitations: Acknowledging what didn't work perfectly demonstrates critical thinking, just explain how you adapted

Justification of Performance Measures:

  • Link metrics to strategic goals explicitly: Clear mapping (e.g., "Customer satisfaction score links to our strategic goal of becoming market leader in user experience")

  • Define success thresholds: What makes a good vs. excellent result? How did you determine these benchmarks?

  • Show critical evaluation: Discuss which metrics proved most valuable and why, and which were less useful than anticipated

General Project Tips

  • Maintain a golden thread: Ensure your user research, methodologies, metrics, and decisions all connect logically throughout the narrative

  • Balance breadth and depth: Cover all assessment criteria but provide detailed examples for complex areas like methodology evaluation and risk analysis

  • Reflect critically: Show what you'd do differently next time, this demonstrates professional maturity

Remember: Assessors want to see your thinking process and decision-making rationale, not just what you did. Always explain the "why" behind your choices.
